Heijoshin Karate-Do is a member dojo of the Seiwa Kai branch  of the Japan Karate Federation Goju Kai organization.  The founder of Seiwa Kai was the late Shuji Tasaki Hanshi, 8th Dan - JKF Goju Kai.  Tasaki Sensei was a direct student of Gogen Yamaguchi and the first all-Japan Goju Kai Kumite champion.  Principle instructors today are Seiichi Fujiwara Hanshi, Head International Instructor -- 8th Dan JKF Goju Kai and Seiwa Kai (Japan); Leo Lipinski, 8th Dan Seiwa Kai and 7th Dan JKF Goju Kai (Europe); Vassie Naidoo, 8th Dan Seiwa Kai and 6th Dan JKF Goju Kai (North America); Des Tuck, 7th Dan Seiwa Kai and 6th Dan JKF Goju Kai (USA).    It is a powerful yet elegant style  combining effective and practical self-defense with numerous other benefits, including improved stamina, balance, and flexibility combined with renewed self-confidence and sense of well being.  For serious athletes, it is excellent cross-training.

The intention of Heijoshin Karate-Do is to pass on the Goju-Ryu karate of Chojun Miyagi without allowing it to be altered or changed simply to fit the precept of modern sport.  The goal of Miyagi's style of Goju-Ryu is to not only teach effective self-defense, but to also improve the character of the practitioner through development of personal discipline, strong work habits, and a sense of community.

Goju-Ryu translates as "the way of hard and gentle."  Miyagi Sensei always believed his karate practitioners should hone a hard body and tough spirit. At the same time they should be able to interact with others in a gentle fashion that contributes to the overall good of society.  In practice, Goju-Ryu utilizes not only the hard and direct linear power of karate, but also the flowing, circular and often indirect movements of the White Crane style of Chinese kung-fu which is a major influence of the style.

We believe Karate should not only make you capable of defending yourself, it should also make you a person worth defending!
